Training: Rising to the Challenge
Becoming a Buck Hill Ski Patrol member requires dedication, but every step of the journey is designed to help you reach your full potential. The training not only equips you with the skills needed to handle emergencies but also builds your confidence to be a hero on the hill.
Step 1: Outdoor Emergency Transportation (OET)
From December to February, you’ll meet twice a week with expert ski, snowboard, and toboggan instructors. This course is all about mastering the art of safely transporting injured individuals down the hill. You’ll refine your skiing or riding technique while learning to navigate a toboggan—a critical skill for any patroller.
Step 2: Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC)
From August to November, you’ll dive into emergency medical care through a combination of online coursework and in-person sessions twice a week. This comprehensive program will teach you to handle a wide range of medical situations, ensuring you’re prepared to respond confidently and effectively on the slopes.
Once you complete both courses, you’ll officially join the ranks as a Basic Alpine Patroller, ready to take on the responsibility of keeping Buck Hill safe.
Patrol Commitment: A Role Worth Every Moment
Each patroller has a regular weekly shift, but your commitment is matched by the rewards. The team works together to accommodate schedules during the day, evenings, or weekends. Additionally, you may be called upon to fill a few extra shifts each season.
To maintain excellence, annual training refreshers in both Outdoor Emergency Care and Outdoor Emergency Transportation are required. These sessions keep your skills sharp and ensure you’re always ready to respond.
